When we scout U19s, the best signal I’ve found is a 6–8 week ‘progression rate’ on three basics — max speed, repeat-sprint drop-off, and coach-rated decision speed — instead of single-game stats; it reveals late bloomers, but we adjust for exam weeks and growth spurts.
A quick example: over a 6–8 week block, we run 3-minute constrained games and log first-touch error under pressure plus a 90-second video “decision test”; those two have beaten raw speed for flagging U19 risers for us. It’s cheap — Google Forms + phone video — and ethical guardrails matter given the “sponsorship in youth” thread; just adjust for PHV so late maturers aren’t penalized, otherwise you get false positives — .
